“The Kingsway Cinema at The Parade on Kings Heath High Street opened 85 years ago this week (2 March 1925) and was designed by Horace G Bradley. The same architect was responsible for a number of Birmingham cinemas - all in the neo-classical style. It closed as a cinema in May 1980 when the final films were “The Bermuda Triangle” and a documentary feature “Encounter with Disaster”. Gala Bingo opened on the site in 1982 and closed in 2007. As a cinema the building had 1362 seats and it was licensed as a bingo hall for 903 occupants. The current planning application is for a 300-seat restaurant and banqueting/conference facility with a capacity of 400. The applicants describe the Gala/Kingsway as “an important feature in the urban landscape of Kings Heath High Street.””

Birmingham Mail - News - Birmingham News - Craig Thompson died in Kings Heath after a scuffle, coroner rules:

Birmingham Coroner, Aidan Cotter, said: “Craig died as a result of injuries he received during a scuffle with an acquaintance after both men had been drinking alcohol.” He added: “Medical evidence shows that Craig sustained 11 injuries, but they are not consistent with a sustained assault. Craig was involved in an incident and that incident caused his death.”

That afternoon they travel through hazardous icy weather to reach the Plaza Ballroom, Old Hill, near Dudley, Staffordshire, for their first scheduled evening performance. But they are unable to make it the 11 miles to the Ritz Ballroom, King’s Heath, Birmingham, Warwickshire, due to a blizzard and the coldest temperatures in seven years. The Ritz performance is rescheduled for February 15. The Beatles’ second single, “Please Please Me/Ask Me Why” (Parlophone 4983), is released in the U.K. It spends 11 weeks on the charts; highest chart position: No.1.”

I was excited to get one of the ♥ Kings Heath shop local tote bags this weekend- they were made as part of the Kings Heath Party on the 5th but if you are lucky some shops in Kings Heath still have some left if you ask.

There is also an amazing new cheese shop open on York Road.
